Bay Area Hospital is located in Coos Bay on the southern Oregon coast just 100 miles north of California and 120 miles southeast of Eugene. It is a 172-bed, publicly owned acute care facility, the regional referral center. As the medical center for Oregon’s South Coast, Bay Area Hospital offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The hospital’s inpatient and outpatient services include medical, surgical, mental health, pediatric, critical care, home health, oncology, obstetrical, and other specialties. Cardiac services include emergency cardiac care, cardiac stress testing, and echocardiography. In 1995, Bay Area Hospital was the first hospital on the Oregon coast to establish a Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. The program provides services to Coos Bay and North Bend and the other small coastal communities of Reedsport, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Bandon, Powers, Port Orford, and Gold Beach. The program has grown to include three registered nurses who are current in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Our program has a close working relationship with the Oregon Heart Center in Eugene. Most patients from the South Coast are referred to OHC for coronary angiography, coronary artery bypass graft, or other interventional procedures and then are referred back to our program for the education and exercise programs. Some referrals to our program come from as far away as Medford and Portland. Our program received national certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in August 2001. Services include:
- Cardiac Rehabilitation
An exercise and education program for those recovering from a heart event. Phase II is offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Phase III maintenance exercise program is offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Education and exercise therapy for those living with chronic lung disease
- Congestive Heart Failure Education
A series of five, free educational sessions provide information to those with congestive heart failure, their family members and caregivers.
